About Me

A sociologist by training, Bill Carroll composes and creates music in the jazz and other genres, in collaboration with his son Wes Carroll.

Born near Washington, D.C., Bill Carroll moved to Canada in 1968 at the age of 16. He discovered jazz, through such fusion artists as Frank Zappa, in his late teens, and began writing music in his 20s while completing a PhD in sociology at York University in Toronto. His music is politically inflected to the left, and many of his performances have been at political rallies. He also brings his music into teaching sociology at he University of Victoria, where he has been a professor since 1981 and currently directs the Interdisciplinary Program in Social Justice Studies.
