I love jazz because it speaks to my very soul. I was first exposed to jazz as a child. It was played in our home. I also listened to it on the radio whenever I could. I met many jazz musicians over the years. As a young 20 something I would go to Baltimore MD to visit my in-laws while my husband was in Vietnam. Our weekend always included live jazz at one of the venues there. The best show I ever attended was...I cannot narrow it down to any one show. Oh yeah. I saw Shirley Horn in Washington DC. My friend was the stage manager. He told her about me and she invited me up on stage to sing "The Nearness of You". SO COOL! The first jazz record I bought was a vinyl of "The Quintet" Miles, Red Garland, John Coltrane, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe. My advice to new listeners study jazz like you are in school! Or whatever else you have in mind.
