Virginia A. Schaefer

Freelance writer and composer

About Me

Grew up hearing jazz at home but didn't get serious about it until the late 1980s. Relevant education includes B.A. in Art from Antioch College, M.M. in Jazz Composition from New England Conservatory, graduate study in music history at U. of Connecticut, and private study in jazz piano and improvisation.

Visceral, explanatory, historical, analytical, critical, sympathetic... are some qualities I try to incorporate and reconcile in writing about jazz.

In addition to AAJ, I've contributed CD and book reviews to Jazz Improv magazine (issued published 2002 through 2004). I'm currently in the early stages of writing a book on jazz piano that focuses on the music of Bud Powell.
