My Jazz Story

There was a beat up upright in a small downstairs room at home and I got to just stand and play that in a kind of an open way which reflected musics from more of an aural tradition I'd picked up on records lying around (e.g. my mum loved Spanish Flamenco), and if I played anything she liked, she'd shout 'Olé' from the kitchen....I liked the encouragement. Later on in my early teens I used to borrow for long periods of time records from my sister - Armorel. Records like early Mose Allison, Otis Spann and Sonny Boy Williamson. Later, after failing most of my O'levels, I lived at home with my parents and did retakes at a local polytechnic in Cornwall. I worked as a farm labourer and as a dish-washer in a hotel in Truro which enabled me to start buying vinyl records from a Cafe in Falmouth. I was listening to Bartok, Schoenberg and Webern chamber music, Booker Ervin and Dexter Gordon on a record called 'Setting the Pace', Cage's Fontana Mix, Berio's Visage. So McLuhan's media is the message was true in that I felt I could hear all kinds of music from all over the world upstairs in my room.
