My Jazz Story

Doug Balfour and I met each other 30-odd years ago at a very memorable summer theatre audition. Doug was playing piano, and I was singing a comic children's song - "Let's Talk Dirty to the Animals" - that was wildly inappropriate for children. As these things often happen, someone had brought their four year old child to sit on the audition panel. I was too naive and inexperienced to figure what should have been an easy way out of the dilemma. So I soldiered on while the panel sat, stone-faced, frozen in disbelief and horror. But Doug, bless his heart, laughed his way through the entire song. Perhaps unsurprisingly, I didn't get the job. But, clearly, it was the beginning of a partnership that was meant to be. On and off, for the past 30 years, Doug and I have been playing our own tunes, as well as jazz, blues and an eclectic mix of just about everything else. And, thankfully, still laughing.
