Originally from Philadelphia, PA, Brooks formed her own band, The Jazz Generation in 2003. She has worked/recorded with an array of talented musicians, including Reggie Graham, noted Sacramento jazz/Gospel musician and good friend who co-wrote the song Lasting Impression.” Musician, jazz educator Michele Weir contributed the arrangement of Listening to the Radio. Eric Tillman accompanied her on the first 2 CDs, Even Sad Memories Are Sweet and Miles to Go Before I Sleep. In 2003, she formed the Jazz Generation, adding a unique style to the Sacramento scene and has since recorded Great Women of Jazz: A Tribute (based on her original show) and a single, Listening To The Radio”--released December, 2005. She records on her own label, Women of Color Day. Another single, “The Strength To Go On,” was released in 2006. A 2007 album, “Lasting Impressions” released in Fall, 2007. The title song, cowritten with Reggie Graham includes Brooks's lyrics recalling an evening spent with Miles Davis at the Showboat in Philadelphia. The newest composition of Brooks and Graham is “Aurora” in February, 2008, was inspired by the Obama campaign and is now the official theme song of Women of Color Day--March 1st of every year. Besides songwriting, Brooks writes poems, stories, essays and show scripts. She acts, dances hula and sings in Spanish, French and Hawaiian. She is CEO of the International Association for Women of Color Day and is currently engaged in developing the World Center for Women of Color Day and Diversity in Montevideo, Uruguay and Sacramento, California.
