Stephanie Borgani is a vocalist, composer, and sideperson from São Paulo, Brazil specializing in wordless voice.
Stephanie is a Brazilian-American vocalist, composer, and educator based in São Paulo whose music centers the use of the voice without words, both as a bandleader and sideperson. Her work has been described as “hovering between the lyrical and the instrumentally acrobatic”(Trabalho Sujo). They are inspired by musical languages such as Brazilian instrumental music, contemporary classical music, free improvisation, and jazz. Currently, she leads and writes for “Mímica”, a chamber quartet of voices and saxophones set to release their debut album in 2026-27, and makes regular appearances as a bandleader, having released the EP “Choro Party Progression” with a sextet in 2021. Other collaborative projects past and present include “Respiro” (original music duo with Luis Chamis, with two EPs released), “Chululu” (vocal duo of Brazilian music re-compositions with Isabel Crespo Pardo), and collaborations with guitarists Mateus Martins and Pritesh Walia. Deeply invested in the inclusion of the voice in instrumental ensemble settings, Stephanie is also a passionate and in-demand sideperson. She has performed alongside artists such as André Marques, Salomão Soares, Tatiana Parra, Gaia Wilmer, Pritesh Walia, Maria Schneider, and Antonio Sánchez, and has recorded as a guest or ensemble vocalist on over 15 albums to date. She has played in a range of venues in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Boston, New York City, and San Diego, and has appeared in festivals such as Jazz a La Calle (URU), Oficina de Curitiba (BRA) and FEMUCIC (BRA). Alongside her work as an artist, Stephanie is an active educator and organizer, passionate about the conscious use of the voice as a tool for musical creation. They maintain a private studio and are currently a lecturer at Berklee Global Partner Souza Lima Conservatório & Faculdade, as well as having taught various workshops and courses on improvisation and instrumental voice. In 2024, Stephanie was a teaching artist at the 41º Oficina de Música de Curitiba. ______ Stephanie received a bachelor's degree from Columbia University and a Master's of Music at the New England Conservatory, where she studied with artists such as Dominique Eade, Frank Carlberg, Miguel Zenon, Jason Moran, and Henrique Eisenmann before returning to her hometown of São Paulo in 2021. From 2024-2025, she was a member of the Tom Jobim Youth Orchestra Arranging and Conducting Atelier, and is currently a student of orchestral composition at EMESP-Tom Jobim, where she studies with Tiago Costa, Rodrigo Lima and Nelson Ayres. Awards won include 2025 Eduardo Álvares Composition Award (1st prize) and 2023 Prêmio TOCA (finalist composer).
