Sounds of Marqué
Music is my addiction, but I am her drug.
About Me
It’s his new approach to jazz that’s catching everyone’s ears. There are artists that just play
and then there are artists that speak to your soul. 26-year-old Marqué Boyd is bringing us
back to great music with his refreshing yet soulful approach to jazz music.
A native of the musical mecca that is Memphis, TN, Marqué grew up listening to the
sounds of Kirk Franklin and Yolanda Adams and developed his distinctive style through his
early exposure to gospel music. He then learned to manipulate those sounds to make them
a soulful expression of his inner self. Growing up in the church, Marqué came to love the
saxophone as a child and began playing at 13-years-old. When he entered middle school,
he joined the concert band and continued playing through his years at Craigmont High
School.
Upon leaving Memphis after high school graduation, Marqué attended Florida A & M
University and became a member of the “Marching 100” during his freshman year. After
two years of school, he left Florida and returned to his hometown. He became a member of
the band Soulful Xpressionz and performed at various venues around the city. Upon
departing from the group, Marqué went on to become a member of the R&B group Touch
of Soul. He has since left Touch of Soul and has gone on to launch his solo career and form
his own band.
The release of Marqué’s debut mixtape in 2010, Rhythm & Jazz: The Unthinkable, was the
launch of his solo career. A compilation of hip-hop, R&B, and soul cover tracks, Marqué
demonstrates his enticing versatility on some of today’s hottest tracks. In February 2012,
Marqué released his sophomore and all original album, QUÉludes: Music. Drugs.
Addicition. Coupled with spoken word and live instrumentation, QUÉludes fully captures
his unique, new sound.
Featured in the Amalgamated: Discovering New Artistry section of Amalgamation
Magazine, Marqué has also made his way on a variety of online radio stations, magazines,
and blog sites. Today’s hip-hop is yesterday’s jazz and through his innovative way of
bringing jazz music, Marqué is trying to bridge that gap.
