BIOGRAPHY SERGIO PEREIRA

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Sergio started playing acoustic guitar at the age of 8 years old. Motivated by his older brother who played the guitar and helped him with his first chords, Sergio was later influenced by the music of bossa-nova giants at the time such as Joao Gilberto, Tom Jobim, Carlos Lyra, Joao Donato, Marcos Valle and many others.

Moving to New York in the 80’s has expanded his musical knowledge by studying with some of the jazz greats including Chuck Wayne, Sal Salvador, Alex Adrian, Hui Cox and Joe Carter. Since the beginning of the 90’s he has travelled the world, playing with different bands and at various venues in many different countries in Europe, Africa and elsewhere.

Sergio has shared music with Gil Goldstein, Mark Egan (Pat Metheny), Matt King (Chuck Loeb), Helio Alves, Nilson Matta, Mauricio Zottarelli, Ralph Moore, Lonnie Plaxico, Duduka da Fonseca, Alex Sipiagin, Reza Khan, Greg Skaff, Vitor Goncalves, Filo Machado and many others.

He has been performing in the United States (US) and Europe at venues such as Club Bonafide, Cornelia Street Cafe, The Jazz Forum, and The Zinc Bar in New York; the Madrid International Jazz Festival, Valencia Jazz Festival, Sala Clamores, Sala Matisse, El Plaza Jazz Club, Cafe Mercedes Jazz, Sala Matisse, La Fabrica de Hielo, Veles e Vents and the Jimmy Glass Jazz Club in Spain.

His previous albums include ‘Swingando' (released independently) and 'Nu Brasil' which was released in 2018 by the New York Latin label “Zoho Music” and “Finesse” release by the Spanish label “Sedajazz Records”. These albums reflect all the emotions, energy and dynamics of growing up in Rio, living around the globe and being in touch with his culture throughout my life.

‘Swingando’ has won “Best Latin Jazz Album” by Clouzine International Music Award and 'Nu Brasil' has won two Global Music Awards for best “Album” and best “Brazilian/Latin Jazz” (Silver Medal), Clouzine International Music Award (Winner), Independent Music Award (nominated for Best Latin Song category), International Songwriting Competition (song: Nu Brasil - semi-finalist). “Finesse” has recently won in February 2024 “Best Tropical Album” at the prestigious 'World Entertainment Awards' in Los Angeles. These albums includes some of the most well- known musicians in the world, such as pianist Helio Alves, flutist Oriente Lopez, harmonica player Gabriel Grossi, saxophonist Perico Sambeat, bassists Mark Egan, Paulo Paulelli and Andre Vasconcellos, singers Paula Santoro and Filo Machado, guitarist Marcus Teixeira , drummer Mauricio Zottarelli, to name a few.

His album ‘Finesse’ has been co-produced by drummer/producer Mauricio Zottarelli and was recorded remotely during the Pandemic 2019/20. It includes 21 top world musicians bringing in the magic, happiness and positivity to the world during these crazy times. It has won the 'World Entertainment Award' for Best Tropical Album in Los Angeles in February 2024.

He will be releasing his 4th album “BOSSA+” on April 24th, 2024 by a US based label. The album is a mix of bossa, funky samba and smooth jazz/pop ballad songs and includes Brazilian guitar great Romero Lubambo, cuban-born pianists Ivan ”Melon” Lewis and Luis Guerra, Cuban-born bassists Ivan Ruiz Machado and Ariel Ramirez, Venezuelan-born trumpet player Chipi Chacon, Uruguayan-born drummer Jose San Martin and Brazilian drummer and producer Mauricio Zottarelli.
