Senri Oe: The Sonic Alchemist of NYC Senri Oe is a genre-defying visionary who has achieved a “total artistic metamorphosis.” Beginning classical piano at age three, he soon turned to composition. While a fateful encounter with jazz at fifteen shaped his musical DNA, he first entered the world of pop. Debuting with Epic Sony Japan at twenty-three, he quickly became a multi-platinum superstar. As a Japanese Grammy winner, actor, TV anchor, and author, he became a “cultural icon” known throughout Japan. However, at forty-seven, Senri walked away from stardom to reclaim his “first love.” Moving to New York City with his beloved dachshund, Peace, he enrolled in The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, reinventing himself from scratch under the mentorship of masters like Junior Mance and Aaron Goldberg. Since his 2012 jazz debut, Boys Mature Slow, Senri has maintained a powerful international presence. From performing at the Atlanta and Detroit Jazz Festivals to headlining SummerFest for two consecutive years, his music has resonated across borders. In 2023, his album Class of ’88 reached #24 on the JazzWeek chart. His latest masterpiece, “HOMEWORK”(Physical CD release in Japan: June 24, 2026; Global Digital Release: September 4, 2026), is the ultimate manifesto of his “New York survival.” Conceived on a PC in his Brooklyn living room and recorded at The Bunker Studio with bassist Matt Clohesy and drummer Ross Pederson—and featuring the “mix magic” of Aaron Nevezie—the album is a “soundtrack without visuals” that fuses digital and acoustic worlds. It is a “Smile Project” for the globe: brilliant, edgy, and profoundly human. Following a solo piano tour in Japan this July, featuring experimental performances at venues like Tokyo’s Suntory Hall, Senri will celebrate the worldwide release with a residency at New York’s legendary Birdland Theater in October. This trio engagement (four sets over two nights) marks his arrival at a borderless music that transcends both pop and jazz.
