Sencalar/Glassman Quintet

A coming of age album featuring both veterans and rising stars in jazz rooted in the bebop tradition featuring a trombone frontline.

About Me

The Sencalar/Glassman Quintet is comprised of co-leaders Altin Sencalar and Chris Glassman. The two trombonists met during their graduate degree course work at Michigan State University. The Sencalar/Glassman Quintet has performed at Moriarty’s Pub and Grill as guest artists for “Jazz Tuesday’s,” Soggy Bottom bar as a part of their weekly jazz night, the Lansing Jazz Festival in 2018, their “Welcome Home” educational tour where they performed and taught students jazz at all East Lansing elementary schools. The tour was based on the Detroit jazz scene’s mantra “each one ,teach one.” This tour was generously sponsored by the East Lansing Cultural Arts Grant FY19 and Michigan State Universities Running Start Grant, and Michigan State University Jazz Studies program. The Quintet has also appeared at the 2019 Detroit Jazz Festival as a part of the “Hometown Hero Series,” The University of North Texas as guests artists, Ohio State University as guests artists, and the 2020 Mid Atlantic Jazz Festival as one of two winners for Paul Carr’s Discovery act. They will also be 2020 American Trombone Workshop as guest artists and are recently named the 2020 “Artists in Residence” for Jazz Institute at Brevard.

As individual artists the two have been named finalists and/or winners in the American Trombone Workshop jazz solo competition division 1 & 2, International Trombone Association J.J. Johnson and Carl Fontana solo trombone competition, the UNT Jazz Trombone Day Competition, Curtis Fuller Detroit Jazz Festival competition, Michael Rath jazz solo trombone competition, Yamaha Young Performing Artist, Kai Winding Jazz Trombone Ensemble, and International Tuba Euphonium Associations Euphonium Excerpts and Rich Matteson Jazz Euphonium Competition. Along with national and international competitive success the two co-leaders have either performed, toured, and/or recorded with Rodney Whitaker, Christian McBride, Ulysses Owens Jr., Steve Davis, Etienne Charles, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Diego Rivera, David Taylor, Teri Lynn Carrington, Carmen Bradford, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Savion Glover, Steve Wilson, Rene Marie, Ali Jackson Jr., Michael Dease, and Xavier Davis.

The quintet will be hot on the heels of their debut album, “Realization” featuring Detroit’s own, Rodney Whitaker, legendary tenor trombonist Michael Dease, and some of jazz music’s rising stars, Addison Frei, Zachary Adleman, and Nathan Borton.
