About Me
Modern Jazz Guitarist in New York City
Guitarist and composer Sebastian Noelle navigates the fluid boundaries between the abstract and the emotional. A native of Germany based in New York City since 2002, Noelle has spent over two decades finding his place in the global jazz scene, balancing thorny and labyrinthine complexity with a lyrical sense of mystery. His latest statement, Blindsight (2026), marks an evolution in his discography. Moving away from the dense architectures of his previous quintets, Noelle embraces the raw, intuitive chemistry of the trio. Joined by bassist Rick Rosato and drummer Jochen Rueckert, the album explores the concept of subconscious navigation—a return to the pure, centered sound of the jazz guitar that trusts instinct over intellect. Noelle’s expansive musical language is fueled by a nomadic curiosity, drawing from German Romanticism, Japanese theater, and extensive studies of North Indian rhythms. His previous release, System One, featured a stellar quartet with Matt Mitchell, Chris Tordini, and Dan Weiss, while 2016's Shelter was hailed by The New York Times for its embrace of both lyrical intricacies and rockish swagger. A long-standing fixture of the New York creative scene, Noelle has released five albums as a leader, four of them on the Fresh Sound New Talent label. His credentials as a sideman include: Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society (Member for 20+ years; featured on four Grammy-nominated albums), Chris Potter Big Band, Jim McNeely Big Band, Miho Hazama, Jihye Lee Orchestra, The Aaron Irwin Quintet, The BMI Jazz Composer’s Workshop Orchestra, Dan Loomis, Patrick Cornelius Noelle has performed at some of the world’s more prestigious venues and festivals—including Newport, North Sea, Montreux, and Moers—and has toured extensively across the US, Europe, Canada, Brazil, and Japan. Whether leading his own ensembles or contributing to large groups, he remains an inventive artist with the power to engage both the mind and the spirit. Noelle serves on the faculty at Hunter College in New York City, as a professor of jazz guitar. Critical Acclaim Noelle is a shape-shifting mutant... whose chameleon-like propensities demand precision. — Mike Greenblatt, Classicalite Highly original and brimming with inventiveness. — Budd Kopman, AllAboutJazz Noelle weeds out any unnecessary theatrics, allowing his penmanship to speak for itself. — The Huffington Post
