My Jazz Story
Our high school biology teacher (southern RI) was crazy about jazz and - for the high performers - taught a short course our senior year in jazz appreciation. He would go
regularly to Boston to catch shows and get albums signed. He turned us on to Miles, Hubbard, Fitzgerald, Getz, and much more. Was not impressed with Joplin's version of
Summertime. I still deeply value that introduction. My main jazz band became, freshman year in college, the Grateful Dead.
