Rozanne Levine

Alto clarinetist, clarinetist, composer, photographer

About Me

ROZANNE LEVINE – alto clarinet, Bb clarinet, bamboo flute, composer, photographer. Rozanne’s interest in the clarinet began in grammar school, when she was selected for the special music class in 6th grade. She focuses on guided improvisations and compositions that allow for creative input from her musicians, and cherishes intuitive organic communication in her music. She has worked with dancers, poets, actors, sound sculptors, in bands large and small, and with some of the most creative musicians on both coasts, including Mark Whitecage, Anthony Braxton, William Parker, Rosi Hertlein, Jason Kao Hwang, Perry Robinson, The New Reed Quartet, The Bi-Coastal Orchestra, and the Improvisors Collective Orchestra, among others. Rozanne released “Only Moment”, the debut CD by her quartet Chakra Tuning, in June 2009. “Only Moment” showcases Rozanne’s compositions performed by saxophonist/clarinetist Mark Whitecage, clarinetist Perry Robinson, violinist/vocalist Rosi Hertlein, and Rozanne. Writing about “Only Moment”, George Harris of All About Jazz said “Rozanne Levine has done remarkable work with Mark Whitecage in various musical settings, but ‘Only Moment’ is a treasure even by their lofty standards”, and Massimo Ricci of Touching Extremes enthused, “Listening to these artists reveal their fundamental nature through the full command of the instruments is just amazing … The artists' technique might be admirable, and indeed it is. But what really wins for me is the sort of opposition to hopelessness that this gorgeous recording generates as early as the circulation of the first notes in the air.” Rozanne is working on 2010/2011 US and European tours for the group through Acoustics, the record label and production company that she and Mark Whitecage co-direct. Rozanne is also a noted photographer - her photos have appeared in All About Jazz-NY since the paper’s inception in 2002; in Jazz Notes, the journal of the Jazz Journalists Association, of which she is a member; in Horizons Touched: The Music of ECM (Granta Books), and worldwide in magazines, newspapers and on CD covers and booklets.
