My Jazz Story

I was first exposed to jazz late at night when I was about 11- that would be 1968. I had insomnia and tried to lull myself to sleep by listening to WMCA-AM radio on my transistor. DJ Frankie Crocker had the last show of the day, and ended his shift each night with, "Moody's Mood for Love" (Eddie Jefferson, James Moody) before going off the air. I loved the song, learned (most of) the words, and it transformed my adolescent anxiety into bliss! It turned on parts of my brain that had never been stimulated before, and shut down my young monkey mind. And that's the beginning of my love affair with jazz - one of the best relationships I've ever had!
