My Jazz Story
I was first exposed to jazz on the late 1950s as a kid watching the
Steve Allen show , he would play with famous musicians, I liked the
sound, I did not know the name of it. one day I watching the Donie
Gillis show and Maynard who was a beatnik said he was do anything to
sit in with Thelonius Monk on Bongos.. years later as I was just
staring out in music as a saxophone player I heard a record by a
friend's big brother, who said "this is Monk's, well you needn't." I
made the earlier connection from my childhood, now a teenager player
in a band I was Hip and cool with my Tam and sunglasses & all the
young girls loved it because, I was different than the other guys.I
went on to play professionally for 25+ years, then due to medical
issues I became a writer of jazz history and avid fan of great players
as a hobby, in which I still totally enjoy today almost 64 years
old..May 2014
