Robert Elchert
Multi-Genre Drummer and Artist
About Me
Robert has been playing and recording drums professionally for over 20 years. During this
time, he has played with Jubal (Jazz/Fusion), Jupiter Hollow (Rock), The Project (Jazz/Fusion),
and Bill Smith (Rock) and several other bands and artists. He also studied with Motown great
and jazz legend, Mel Brown and has had lessons with Paul Wertico, Byron Wookie Landham,
and Jon Fishman.
Having multiple influences and experience in several different types of bands has helped
Robert develop a unique sound. Elements of Elvin Jones, Billy Cobham, Art Blakey, and others
can be heard in his playing along with influences from Brazilian Samba and West African
drumming.
Robert has taught privately and for school-related programs. In 2012, he started Bronzeville
Drums, an after-school program that teaches samba drumming to students on the south side
of Chicago.
Although offered a small scholarship to Berklee, Robert finished his education at Portland
State University where he earned a B.A. in International Studies and a Minor in Jazz Studies.
He also holds a M.A. in Social Service Administration from the University of Chicago. He
continues to work, play, and teach in Chicago.
