My Jazz Story
I love jazz because it connects me to my grandmother and the way the music moves me. There’s an emotional depth and spontaneity in jazz that speaks to me on a personal level — it’s
both a comfort and a creative spark.
I was first exposed to jazz by my grandmother, Mardi, who was a jazz singer in the ABC Band, performing alongside my grandfather on double bass. Jazz wasn’t just background music
in my family — it was a living, breathing part of our home.
The best show I ever attended was a performance by Australian trumpeter James Morrison, whose energy, mastery, and sheer joy for the music left a lasting impression on me.
The first jazz record I bought was Twentysomething by Jamie Cullum, an album that opened my eyes to how modern interpretations could still honour the spirit of classic jazz.
My advice to new listeners is to remember that jazz is a broad and beautifully varied genre. Explore its many styles and eras until you find the version that truly resonates with you.
