Rex Shepherd

Rex Shepherd is a guitarist and composer, blending influences from jazz, rock, and world music into modern instrumental compositions and improvisations.

About Me

Since the age of 11, Rex Shepherd has been pushing the boundaries of his imagination and physical abilities on the guitar to meld his many influences - Jimi Hendrix, Jim Hall, John Coltrane, Fred Frith, and the compositions of Wayne Shorter - into a singular, recognizable voice to express the “deranged but totally interesting” sounds in his head. Moving through periods of playing rock and blues music - most notably with original rock band Fallout in the 1980?s - it was the discovery of the free expression of giants John Coltrane and Jim Hall that Shepherd began to expand his musical vocabulary and utilize the guitar in a more exhaustive manner, experimenting with effects, adding other odd instruments such as the ?ocean harp,? and the Theremin, and using prepared guitar ideas like conjoined strings and bowing. In addition to recording and playing solo performances, Shepherd has enlisted musicians of like mind to record and perform music under the band name No End of Now, with two releases “Pieces Together” and “Some Music We Made.”

My Jazz Story

The first jazz record I bought was Jim Hall and Ron Carter's "Alone Together." I had been a rock player until then...after listening to that record I was hooked, I spent the next few years learning to speak the jazz language.
