About Me

A new breed of truly versatile singer, holding degrees in jazz and classical performance (BMUS Hons 1st Class), Thoms is a real all- rounder. She is the recipient of the 2011 Canberra International Music Festival Young Performer Award and is a vocal tutor in both jazz and classical faculties of the Australian National University School of Music.

In 2011 Thoms released her debut jazz recording, “The Great Unknown” with improvising pianist and composer, Luke Sweeting. Along with touring, recording, and writing with Sweeting she is involved in several other projects including the Alex Raupach Sextet, her own jazz standards quartet, as well as artsong, recital, and oratorio performances.

Rachael has had the great fortune to study with Christina Wilson, Alan Hicks, Simon Kenway, Professor Valeria Esposito, Vince Jones, Kristin Berardi, Mike Price, Miroslav Bukovsky, and a host of other great teachers and performers, as well as attending master-classes and coaching with OzOpera, Tessa Bremner, Stephen Delaney (Vienna), John Gordon (USA), Don Byron (USA), Steve Magnusson, Matt McMahon, Sandy Evans, David Miller, Sharolyn Kimmorley, and Andrea Katz.

Performance credits include appearances with Song Company and Roland Peelman, Lisa Moore, Pascal and Ami Rogé, George Benson, Vince Jones, Rob Guest, Lior, Peter Cousins, Kamahl, Miroslav Bukovsky, Bill Risby, and Matt Baker. She has performed at the Canberra International Music Festival, Capital Jazz Project, Floriade, Canberra Artsong, Bloom Festival, the Italian Ambassador's Residence, the High Commision of Papua New Guinea, The Embassy of Finland, Government House, Parliament House, Jazz at the Loft, God's Cafe jazz series, Hippo Bar, ANU School of Music, and was a top 100 finalist in the ABC's Operatunity Oz television series.
