I love jazz because of its freedom. I was first exposed to jazz with Count Basie than John Scofield's "Rough House" I met John Hollenbeck, Archie Shepp, Jean-Jacques Milteau, Giovanni Mirabassi. The best show I ever attended was...can't say, so many wonderful artists. The first jazz record I bought was " Best of Chess Records " My advice to new listeners: depends on the taste of new listener, jazz is so open. Whatever music you listen, you'll fine its reflect in Jazz.
