I grew up in a jazz household and began collecting my own records in 1959, and I was fortunate to have caught live most of the iconic players who were active in that watershed year. I have a little music background, both practical and formal. Bebop is my native musical language, and when I listen to American vernacular music of any genre I tend to listen with bebop ears, and judge it by bebop standards. So what I relate to most is music based on recognizable chord changes, borrowed from the Great American Songbook or from traditional progressions like the 12-bar blues.

Almost all my jazz listening in-person experience has been in clubs.
