Patrick Keeney

About Me

Patrick Keeney is a Canadian writer, academic, and cultural critic whose work spans philosophy, education, and the arts.

I am an amateur guitarist whose introduction to jazz came through listening to some of the music’s great practitioners, including Tal Farlow, Charlie Byrd, Herb Ellis, and Joe Pass. That early apprenticeship in listening left a lasting impression. My musical interests lie primarily within the tradition of acoustic jazz, particularly among performers who understand that virtuosity need not be accompanied by excess, and that restraint can be as eloquent as display. I'm very much attracted to solo guitar. I'm a great admirer of Pat Metheny and the sensibility he brings to his 2004 album, "One Quiet Night". By profession, I am a writer, educator, and researcher. I write as a lifelong student of the arts who believes that attentive listening remains one of the most valuable human capacities. I bring to my writing about music many of the same questions that animate my work in literature, education, and culture. What does a work of art ask of us? What does it reveal about the civilisation that produced it? And what is lost when we cease to listen carefully, whether to music, to ideas, or to one another?
