About Me

Sky Covington is a recording artist, producer, activist, wife, mother, and law keeper, devoted to preserving jazz, uplifting her community, and walking in truth with the Most High.

Sky Covington is a recording artist, jazz poet, producer, activist, wife, mother, and a devoted law keeper. With a career that spans more than two decades, she has become one of Detroit’s most cherished voices in jazz, blending artistry with community service and faith. As a producer and director, Sky has created acclaimed productions such as The Satin Doll Revue, Take Five: The All-Male Jazz Revue, and the long- running Preservation of Jazz Monday Night Music Series at Aretha’s Jazz Café. Her creative vision preserves the legacy of iconic artists while building platforms for the next generation of musicians. Her journey has taken her across Detroit’s legendary stages—Baker’s Keyboard Lounge, Woodbridge Pub, Tangent Gallery, Gina’s Jazz Club, Harbor House, Exodos Rooftop—and beyond to New Orleans and New York’s Metropolitan Room. She has also performed internationally, touring with Mahogani Music and Kenny Dixon. Along the way, she has shared stages with world-renowned artists, including Jonathan Butler and Kirk Whalum. Sky’s work as an activist and community builder is equally impactful. She is the founder of Hug Detroit Day and the Hug Detroit Community Collective, initiatives that bring unity, service, and healing to her city. For her cultural leadership, she has been honored with numerous awards, including multiple Detroit Music Awards, the Spirit of Detroit Award, and recognition from the State of Michigan. At the heart of her artistry is her family. Reunited with her husband William Freeman after 25 years, she embraces her role as a wife and proud stepmother with love and gratitude. Guided by her faith in the Most High, Sky walks in purpose as a law keeper, grounding her work in scripture, truth, and legacy. Her story is one of resilience, creativity, and service. Whether producing a tribute show, building community through Hug Detroit, or honoring the Sabbath with her family, Sky Covington embodies the timeless spirit of jazz and the transformative power of faith and love.

My Jazz Story

I love jazz because it has always carried a truth and integrity that cannot be shaken. Throughout history, jazz has preserved its soul—evolving yet never losing the heart of its story. In my own life, it has given me sophistication, strength, and freedom, shaping both my artistry and my spirit. Jazz is more than music; it is a living history, a testimony of resilience, and a language of the soul. Through my performances, productions, and community work, I strive to preserve that legacy—to honor the legends who came before me while creating new spaces for this music to grow. My mission is to ensure that jazz remains a force of inspiration, culture, and truth for generations to come

My House Concert Story

My House Concert Story For me, the stage has always felt like home—and nowhere has that been more true than at Aretha’s Jazz Café in the heart of Detroit. Week after week, I’ve been blessed to share intimate evenings of music in this historic space, where the walls themselves seem to echo with the legacy of jazz. These shows are not just concerts; they are gatherings of community, spirit, and song. One of my proudest creations, The Satin Doll Revue, was born out of this spirit. This production celebrates the timeless voices of Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Sarah Vaughan, and so many more, while weaving my own story into the tapestry of jazz history. Through these tributes, I honor the legends, uplift the women who paved the way, and invite audiences to experience the elegance, strength, and soul of jazz in its purest form. Every performance is more than entertainment—it is a conversation with the past, a celebration of the present, and a gift to the future.
