About Me

Global jazz artist rooted in Mozambican culture

Mozambican jazz saxophonist, composer, and producer Moreira Chonguiça is celebrated as one of Africa’s leading voices in contemporary jazz. An independent artist with seven acclaimed and award-winning albums, he has built an international reputation for blending the rich musical traditions of Mozambique with global jazz influences. In recognition of his contribution to the arts and cultural exchange, he was recently honoured by the French Government as a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters. Inspired by legendary artists such as Miles Davis, Fela Kuti, Percy Sledge, and Manu Dibango, Moreira has developed a distinctive musical identity rooted in African rhythms, sophisticated jazz arrangements, and contemporary world music influences. His energetic compositions, technical mastery of the alto and soprano saxophone, and magnetic stage presence have captivated audiences across all six continents. Beyond performance, Moreira’s career reflects the power of music as a tool for cultural diplomacy. Through international collaborations, performances, educational initiatives, and mentorship programmes, he continues to build bridges between cultures and communities. His work consistently creates spaces for dialogue, connection, and artistic exchange while championing Mozambican culture on the global stage. Deeply rooted in Mozambique’s rich musical heritage, Moreira embodies the spirit of African creativity, innovation, and pride. By seamlessly blending traditional sounds with contemporary jazz, his performances become more than concerts — they are celebrations of diversity, unity, and human connection. Through his music, Moreira advocates for peace, cultural awareness, and the preservation of heritage, inspiring audiences around the world through the universal language of music.

My Jazz Story

I love jazz because it has opened the world to me. It has given me the freedom to travel, to connect with people from different cultures, and to constantly discover new ways of expressing myself. Jazz is alive — it moves, evolves, and adapts, much like nature follows the seasons and responds to the elements in order to survive. My musical curiosity keeps pushing me forward. I always want to explore new sounds, new collaborations, and new ideas. For me, standing still creatively is not an option. If I stop moving, growing, and challenging my circumstances, that would feel like a fate far worse than death. Jazz gives me the space to remain curious, fearless, and connected to the world around me.
