About Me
Jazz and music in general is an aural souvenir of mankind's attempt to express the intangible, the heart, the soul, through art. I write of what I discover as I watch and enjoy the exploration.
My ArticlesMy Jazz Story
I love jazz because...
I was first exposed to jazz.....I was very young walking by a tobacconist's in Berlin. Monk's Four in One song was playing. I heard it coming through open
window. It immediately transfixed me. I stood there staring in the direction the music was coming from, occasionally people stopping to see what i was
looking at. The next song came on was Coltrane's version Summertime. Both these pieces very different from one another but unlike anything I had ever
heard before. It began a lifelong love affair.
I met [musician name]...too many to name, pals w/many sustained partially due to my discretion.
The best show I ever attended was...Pharoah Sanders solo at Grace Cathedral. B,J Papa's final gig at Original Enrico's in North Beach (back when Maitre D
had podium with cat who also "worked" there. He would walk home at end of night with same cat sleepily perched on his shoulder) when he insisted I sit
next to him on piano bench for few songs and if not join in playing then sing which I shyly did.
The first jazz record I bought was. Thelonious Monk Genuis of Modern Music Vol 2
My advice to new listeners...big ears, explore everything. Now w/all online things easy to do for free.
Or whatever else you have in mind. If one feels as if eternally a student or explorer then you are doing something right.
