About Me
My Jazz Story
I love jazz because it's free-spirited and inventive - at least when it's done right. My dad listened to jazz a lot when I
was
growing up, and I had a few personal favorites, like "Maiden Voyage" by Herbie Hancock, "The Shadow of Your
Smile" by
Mandel and Webster, and "Pretty World" (or just about anything) by Sergio Mendez and Brazil 66. The first jazz I
ever bought
was "Storm at Sunset" by Gino Vannelli and "All Fly Home" by Al Jarreau. I'recently had the pleasure of seeing both
Steely Dan
and Michael Franks in concert - a dream come true! I really enjoyed seeing George Duke perform from "Carmel" and
Brazilian
Love Affair" in California year ago. But I have to say that one of the best concerts I ever attended, as far as
experimentation
and "wow" moments was Earth, Wind & Fire when they were just starting out and heavy into the Afro-Latin sound.
My House Concert Story
I once had a friend who had a friend who was a fantastic artist in the likes of Peter Max. He had this cottage right on
the beach
and often had people over to enjoy food, drinks and to showcase their talents, usually musical, but poetry, or
whatever. One
night he had this guest pianist that stopped by, blew us away, and then split before we could tell him how much we
enjoyed his
music. I could have sworn he sounded like Jeff Lorber. Getting together at this guys was one of the best experiences
ever.
