About Me

Puerto Rican born & raised in Spanish Harlem, NYC. TV producer, actress, director and editor. Survivor-advocate triumph lives trauma, music a memory into documentary. Very gifted and passionate,

Maribel Ramos Brooks is a Puerto Rican–born and raised from Harlem. A filmmaker, television producer, actress, and salsa instructor whose life’s work is rooted in resilience, storytelling, and service. Raised in East Harlem amid domestic violence and emotional neglect, she transformed personal trauma into purpose, later finding healing through music, movement, and the art of filmmaking. After surviving abuse and living in a women’s shelter, she began volunteering to help other women reclaim their voices, an experience that deeply shaped her creative mission. Maribel went on to become a television producer, converting her own home into a working studio, and now creates intimate, socially conscious documentaries that explore mental illness, father–daughter relationships, forgiveness, and generational healing—using her own story as a bridge for others to feel seen, heard, and less alone. Music is her way of self-expression.

My Jazz Story

I was first exposed to jazz...by my husband. The first time I heard Sarah Vaughan, something in me cracked open—in her voice I heard pain, elegance, strength, and freedom all at once, as if she was singing the things I never had words for. Her sound didn’t just reach my ears, it reached my soul, and in that moment I understood that singing wasn’t about perfection, it was about truth. I became passionate about teaching myself to sing because my voice, like hers, is a place where emotion lives—where survival, memory, and love can breathe. When I sing, I’m not performing; I’m expressing my soul, honoring my story, and allowing my spirit to rise, one note at a time. I’ve never sang in a crowd. I would love to start but don’t where.

My House Concert Story

With all respect. Unfortunately, I have never been to a jazz house concert.
