About Me

Manny Flores was born in Biggs Field, El Paso. He spent 20 years as an army brat traveling to US Army bases in Germany, Georgia, Oklahoma and Arizona. He returned to El Paso in 1975 and graduated from UTEP in 1982. He began teaching music in the Ysleta Independent Schools in 1983 and taught for 26 years before retiring in 2009. Manny played with the El Paso Symphony Orchestra from 1983 to 1993 under the direction of Abraham Chavez Jr. He studied Double Bass with Gary Karr in Victoria, British Columbia, Eddie Gomez in New York City and electric bass with Adriano Giffoni in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil He studied Brazilian percussion with Airto Moreira at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California. Since 1998 he has been going to Brazil to become familiar with the music, in particular of his mentor, Hermeto Pascoal.
