About Me

Soulful Jazz Pianist, Vocalist & Composer who is daughter of jazz great: pianist/composer, Mal Waldron

Mala is a prolific songwriter as well as an accomplished pianist/vocalist based in the New York City area. She has performed internationally in such places as Italy, Japan, France, China, Malaysia and Russia, as well as at noted NYC jazz clubs such as the Jazz Standard, Dizzy's Club Coca Cola, the Iridium, BAM Cafe, Cornelia St. Cafe and the 55 Bar. Equally captivating on vocals as on piano, she has been compared to the likes of Nina Simone, Diana Krall and Roberta Flack. Her CDs include “He's My Father” (duo with her father, jazz pianist/composer Mal Waldron) “Lullabye” (tribute to her godmother, Billie Holiday) and “Always There” which made Jazz USA's “Top 20 Jazz CDs of 2006.” Her new CD, “Deep Resonance,” will be released this April and is an intimate, up- close-and-personal look at her artistic soul. The CD consisting mainly of her original compositions (and one cover of Joni Mitchell's Jericho) features wonderful performances by Vincent Gardner (trombone), Allen Won (bass flute), Maurizio Rolli (fretless bass), Akua Dixon (Cello) and Jonathon Peretz (percussion.)

My Jazz Story

I was first exposed to jazz probably before I was even born! Being the daughter of two jazz pianists, most notably my father, Mal Waldron, the music and culture of jazz has always been a part of my life. It has become a natural basis of everything I create, not always consciously, but because it is a very essential part of my being.
