Taiwanese improvising flutist, curator, and Music Director of Lin’s Culture in Taipei

Lin Hsiao-Feng is a Taiwanese improvising flutist, curator, and Music Director of Lin’s Culture in Taipei. His work bridges Taiwanese and multi-ethnic flute traditions, free improvisation, and experimental sound, exploring how traditional wind instruments can enter contemporary performance through cross-cultural collaboration. He performs on dizi, xiao, the Indigenous Paiwan nose flute, and other traditional wind instruments, often combining them with piano, electronics, and real-time improvisation. His artistic practice focuses on expanding the contemporary possibilities of flute traditions while remaining attentive to their cultural histories. In 2024, Lin was named World Flutist of the Year by the World Flute Society for his album Cadenza21 and was invited to perform in connection with the Paris Cultural Olympiad. In 2025, he was invited to Indiana University Bloomington for a residency involving performances, lectures, and cultural exchange. In 2026, Lin completed a U.S. tour with pianist and harpsichordist Hsuan Chang Kitano as Cadenza Duo, presenting performances and talks in Washington, D.C. and Wisconsin. At the World Flute Society Annual Convention, he presented “Taiwan’s Paiwan Nose Flute Tradition” and performed with Cadenza Duo as part of the Featured Evening Performers program. Through performance, curation, teaching, and instrument making, Lin continues to develop connections between Taiwanese flute traditions, free improvisation, and contemporary experimental music.
