The first jazz record I bought was Ahmad Jamal at the Pershing when I was in eighth grade in Chicago. Listening to Charles
Mingus' The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady the first night I was introduced to smoke, about six years later, was the next step.
Ornette Coleman's The Shape of Jazz to Come sealed the deal.
