Kristian Alexandrov

Bulgarian pianist, percussionist, composer & producer

About Me

Winner of the 2008 Canadian Smooth Jazz Award for Best Pianist, this accomplished Bulgarian pianist is definitely hitting his stride.

Born and raised in Sofia, Bulgaria, Kristian grew up in a family of musicians and was surrounded by music from a very early age.  He was exposed to a variety of world music styles:  Bulgarian folk, Classical, Afro-Cuban and Contemporary Jazz.  Recognizing Kristian’s talent, his parents enrolled him in piano lessons at the age of four.  At six years of age, Kristian was accepted into the prestigious L. Pipkov School of Music where he completed his musical education, twelve years of intense training as a pianist and percussionist.  Kristian’s natural ability, extensive training and passion for performance enabled him to tour across much of Europe by the age of nineteen.

Since moving to Canada in 1995, Kristian has firmly entrenched himself in the Canadian music scene - as an active composer, performer, producer, clinician and studio musician.  One  collaboration of note is Kristian’s seventeen year musical involvement with Decidedly Jazz Danceworks as a composer and musical director.  Onstage Kristian has worked alongside some tremendous Canadian and international artists, including:  Jens Lindemann, Randy Brecker, Eric Marienthal, Kenny G, Alain Caron, Bob Mintzer, All Star Brass, The Tenors, Senator Tommy Banks, Wycliffe Gordon, Adam Rapa, Allen Vizzutti, Rex Richardson, Tom Jackson, Shannon Gaye and Jackie Richardson.

Career highlights include performing in the orchestra for the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympic Winter Games hosted in Vancouver February 2010.  July 2012, Kristian led the band in thirty-three shows over eleven days as Musical Director for the world premiere of “Tails”, a large-scale production incorporating music, dance, theatre and thirty horses in a celebration of Calgary Stampede’s 100th Anniversary.
