Kris Smith, born and raised in Minneapolis, is a journalism major at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where he’s lived since 2022. A lifelong music lover, Kris is passionate about jazz in all its forms, with a particular appreciation for post-bop legends like Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock, whose Head Hunters (1973) album ranks among his favorites. His musical tastes also encompass swing, western swing, and gypsy jazz, with icons like Django Reinhardt, Duke Ellington, and Ella Fitzgerald holding a special place in his heart. Knoxville’s thriving jazz and rock scenes have been a source of inspiration for Kris, offering a vibrant community of talented musicians and dynamic performances. When not immersing himself in the world of jazz, Kris enjoys playing guitar, rock climbing, and cycling through the scenic urban wilderness of South Knoxville. He aims to spotlight the rich stories behind jazz and its artists through his writing.
