I used to say, "I love music that makes me think and music that makes me sweat." Still true, but now I'd lead with "I
love music that makes me connect with other people." Jazz does all of these.
My House Concert Story
At a house concert people can't avoid sitting in the front row. You might have to lean to one side to avoid getting hit by the pianist's elbow. (True story.) The drummer might hand you a cowbell to play along. (True story.) If you're in the band, you can make good eye contact with people in the audience. (Sexy true story.) In short, audience and band are in it together. And I love music that makes people connect.
