Joshua Weiner

Joshua Weiner enjoys his day job as biology professor at a Big Ten University, but wishes it left more time (and money) for music.

About Me

I was raised in Milwaukee, went to college at Northwestern, got a Ph.D. in Neurobiology at UC-San Diego, worked as a postdoctoral scientist at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, and am now Associate Professor in the Dept. of Biology at the University of Iowa. Which, they tell me, is a “real job”, finally.

I am a proud alumnus of ~15 garage rock bands and now write, perform (drums, guitars, bass, keys, vocals), and record my own Beatlesque indie rock in my basement studio with my (long-distance) collaborator Rob L. We released our first album as The Poor Richards in 2006, and a 5- song EP (”When I Can”) in 2007. Both are available via iTunes or CD Baby, if you're interested, and you can sample on SoundCloud. I also play drums in Winterland, a Grateful Dead tribute band. I have too many guitars, drum sets, and records and a very lovely and understanding wife, along with 3 beautiful young children.

All About Jazz needs your support

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, shelter in place and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary effort that will help musicians now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the bottom right video ad). Thank you.
