When I was younger, I used to listen to Ben Paterson and study the way he played — the swing, the touch, the way he told a story without forcing anything. His records were part of how I learned what jazz could be. Years later, I found myself on stage playing with him. That moment felt full circle. The music that shaped me became something I was inside of — not just listening to, but contributing to. That’s why I love jazz. It connects generations, and somehow, if you stay with it long enough, it brings you home

I remember sitting in the Village Vanguard watching Julian Lage. The room was silent in that way only the Vanguard can be where the air almost vibrates between phrases. Julian played with this mix of freedom and control that made the guitar feel limitless. That night shifted something in me. That concert didn’t just inspire me. It set a direction.
