Josh Mizruchi (born September 3, 1985) is an American trumpet player and composer. As a child, Mizruchi lived in New Rochelle, New York and Morningside Heights, Manhattan. At the age of 6, he moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he grew up and began playing the trumpet at the age of eleven. After hearing Miles Davis's Kind of Blue for the first time, he became interested in jazz improvisation and attended a workshop by former Blue Note recording artist Louis Smith, who encouraged the young player. Mizruchi also got to perform with Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra members Seneca Black (lead trumpet), and Rodney Whitaker (bass). Mizruchi attended Interlochen Center for the Arts' Summer Camp and the Berklee Summer Program in Boston, where he studied with Lin Biviano. Upon finishing high school, he attended the University of Michigan, performing with such artists as Terence Blanchard, Geri Allen and Michael Philip Mossman. In 2007, Josh released his first (self-titled) album at the age of 21. After receiving his Bachelors degree, he received a Masters degree from New England Conservatory, where he performed with Dave Holland and David Liebman. Mizruchi moved to New York City in 2012, where he quickly began attracting attention. Arturo O'Farrill heard him play and made note of it, inviting him to perform with his Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra. O'Farrill also commissioned Josh to perform the “Afro Cuban Jazz Moods,” (originally written for Dizzy Gillespie by Chico O'Farrill), a rare and distinct honor for the 27-year-old trumpet player. Josh went on from there to play opposite some of the biggest names in jazz and popular music: Roy Hargrove, Christian McBride, Dr. Barry Harris, Jimmy Owens, Ben Folds, several members of Parliament Funkadelic, and Valerie Simpson, to name but a few. In 2018, Mizruchi performed on The Today Show on NBC, and released his second album, Boston to New York, to enthusiastic reviews. Mizruchi is noted for his technique, range, and unique, colorful sound. As a result of his continued growth and development as an artist, he has developed an individualized approach, including his own distinct musical vocabulary, while still honoring the obvious influences of musical masters such as Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Roy Eldridge, Louis Armstrong, Freddie Hubbard, and many others. He currently lives in Newark, New Jersey. In addition to his busy performing schedule, he is also an avid music educator.
