Jazz From Planet Flippo

Since 1997 Dave Flippo has lead his modern jazz ensemble FLIPPOMUSIC, performing his original "globaljazz'" work that blend jazz with music from the world over. Their latest project "Tao Tunes" sets the ancient Tao Te Ching and add a vocal dimension.

About Me

Dave Flippo arrived in Chicago in 1987 after completing his Doctorate in Music Composition at the University of Michigan. He formed his modern jazz ensemble FLIPPOMUSIC a few later and began performing and recording his “globaljazz” compositons on Southport Records-”Tendrils of Light” and “Ganesh.” These pieces blended jazz with a vast array of cultural styles the world over.

In 2004 Flippo began writing vocal pieces and singing and released “When the Heart is Strong” with Donn De Santo. The band's most recent project, “Tao Tunes,” is a modern vocal jazz setting of the ancient Chinese text, the Tao Te Ching. Flippo set eighteen chapters from the work to music in a wide variety of styles-funk, swing, Afro Cuban, ambient, beguine, rock, samba, jazz waltz, 6/4 tango and Latin-rock. “Tao Tunes” is set for a November 27th, 2011 release date. The band continues to play Chicago clubs: The Wonderbar, Katerina's, Heartland Cafe, Jerry's Wicker Park and C.J. Arthurs.

My Jazz Story

I've been playing the piano and writing music for 57 years now - since age four (yup, wrote a dinky tune when I was four)- and, after eleven years of college, completed a Doctorate and Masters in Music Composition and Theory (Univ. of Michigan and The Eastman School Music) with jazz, music history and world music studies on the side. I changed directions after graduating and moved to Chicago and studied jazz with Alan Swain and formed my jazz ensemble in 1993. I formed the band mainly to play my own original compositions and arrangements. At this point, my focus was "globaljazz" because my compositions blended jazz elements with all types of world music - Middle Eastern, Indonesian, Greek, Latin, African, Reggae, Asian, Romanian as well as swing tunes and ballads. We recorded two albums of these pieces on Southport Records: "Tendrils of Light" (1994) and "Ganesh" (2001). I began singing and writing more vocal compositions and did a duo album with bassist Donn De Santo- "When the Heart is Strong" (2004) I returned to my "worldjazz" mindset from a new direction and set 18 Chapters of the Tao Te Ching with vocals in English in a multitude of Styles with the Quartet: "Tao Tunes" (2011) This book is the foundation of my world view and my spiritual foundation and this project was a true labor of love. Shortly after this, the owner of a fancy restaurant where I played kept asking for rock classics and I kept writing arrangements for him until I had built up quite a collection of tunes by Dylan, Hendrix, Cream, The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, Bowie and more. The instrumental trio recorded an album of these tunes "Life on Mars" (2016) After this journey into arranging I dove back into writing-particularly new compositions with a leaning to counterpoint, extended forms and odd/mixed meters. This sixth CD is almost completed and due out in the Spring of 2020. I have also self-published ALL MY ORIGINALS WORKS -65 and counting - on Sheetmusic Plus and created a page featuring the audio head of every composition. MOST compositions are available to purchase for $5 and range in difficulty from intermediate to advanced. They're great for advanced students or to add to your jazz book. There's discriptions of each piece's style, meter, groove and compositional traits, so feel free to wander around and take a listen. Each tune comes with C, Bb and Eb charts and some include rhythm/ bass charts.

All About Jazz needs your support

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, shelter in place and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary effort that will help musicians now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the bottom right video ad). Thank you.
