Ian Sinclair
Ian Sinclair is a freelance pianist, educator, composer/arranger, and writer with an abiding interest in jazz and creative music in general.
About Me
A Saskatchewan, Canada born and raised musician, I have long had an interest in jazz and creative music. As a pianist, I have had experiences that have been very special to me and developed my love of the music.
I had a recent stay in the Dallas area from 2004 through 2007, during which I completed a Masters degree in Jazz Performance at the University of North Texas and worked as a freelance musician. At UNT, I performed with numerous award-winning jazz groups including the University of North Texas 2 O'Clock Lab Band and the Brian Donohoe Quintet which was co-winner of Most Outstanding College Small Jazz Ensemble in the 2007 Down Beat Student Awards. My own quintet was featured as part of the University of North Texas's 2007 CD, Étranger, which featured the best musicians in its prestigious jazz program. While there I performed with such jazz luminaries as Snooky Young, Dave Stryker, and Johnny Vidakovich. I have also played with commercial acts ranging from a tenure as keyboardist for Dallas's most popular cover band Emerald City Band to appearances with famous entertainers like Little Anthony and the Imperials. Prior to my time in Dallas, I had performed with acclaimed groups in Montreal and Saskatoon.
In 2007, I was selected as the Artist-in-Residence and Lecturer at
the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho a position I held until
2008. In addition to teaching taught jazz piano and jazz appreciation,
he performed extensively with faculty and visiting jazz artists.
As of September 2009, I will be starting studies at the University of
Toronto in the Doctor of Musical Arts in Jazz Performance program, the
first doctoral jazz program in Canada. I look forward to contributing to, and writing about, the vibrant jazz scene in the great city of Toronto.
