Heidi Goldsmith

uncommon sense and aural opinions

About Me

Raised amongst the chiselled hedges and security alarms of North London's suburbs, Heidi Goldsmith began the search for more interesting sounds than hedge-cutters. Having erected a shrine to the Beatles at the early age of 5 she soon moved from psychadelia to swing and began a long-distance love affair with Coltrane. As both a singer and a linguist (both affairs of the tongue) moving into music journalism was only logical and she began establishing herself as a blogger and critic. After taking masterclasses with Kevin Le Gendre and having recently discovered her work reposted on Kurt Elling's website she now feels legitimate and is continuing the never-ending quest to find verbal parallels for the beautifully inexplicable power of music.

My Jazz Story

I first discovered jazz through Coltrane's 'My Favourite Things', aged 8 and fascinated by the sheer creativity to transform a familiar song and transport it into a new world of harmonic beauty. His complexity and purity captured me and I began delving further, exploring African roots jazz artists such as Randy Weston and Art Blakey, always with a particular penchant for that sensual rawness of the music and the vinyl recordings. But I am also an avid follower of the British jazz scene, with young artists giving guts to jazz, with experimental sounds from bands such as Polar Bear, Saltwater Samurai and Trio VD. The journey continues.
