About Me

Preserving the cultural lanndscape.

BIO francisco rocky garcia is an American documentary and fine art photographer whose work explores the intersection of jazz, culture, history, and community. Raised in a musical household by a mother who was a jazz vocalist, he developed an early appreciation for jazz that evolved into a lifelong commitment to documenting the artists and communities who shaped its history. Over nearly two decades, Garcia created an extensive photographic record of some of the most influential figures in jazz while preserving the cultural landscapes in which this uniquely American art form flourished. His work documents not only celebrated musicians but also the audiences, venues, festivals, and community spaces that sustained a vibrant and evolving musical tradition. Working primarily in available light, Garcia is recognized for intimate black-and-white photographs that move beyond performance to reveal the humanity, dignity, and creative spirit of his subjects. His images include legendary artists such as Max Roach, Abbey Lincoln, Sonny Rollins, Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard, Art Blakey, and Charles Gayle. Equally important, they chronicle the creative dialogue between African American and Asian American artists whose collaborations expanded the language of jazz while engaging broader conversations about identity, cultural expression, history, and social justice. Photographed in clubs, concert halls, festivals, and community cultural spaces throughout the United States, Garcia's work preserves a pivotal period in American jazz. More than performance.

My Jazz Story

I love jazz because... I was first exposed to jazz... I met [musician name]... The best show I ever attended was... The first jazz record I bought was... My advice to new listeners... Or whatever else you have in mind.

My House Concert Story

I was first exposed to jazz when two events took place before I could tie my shoes in the early ’50s. One, my mother sitting me in the front row of a San Francisco nightclub while singing. And two, wanting to participate in a family ritual of listening to Dexter, Ella, and Bird. I’d run to get my plastic saxophone and quickly move in front of the record player. I’d rock back and forth. Romero (uncle Angel’s partner in crime). “What are you doing Rocky”? he’d say. “I’m just trying to catch the rhythm.” I've been hooked from then on.
