Fradley Garner is an American freelance writer, editor and translator based in Denmark.
Fradley Garner is International Editor and a columnist for Jersey Jazz, monthly journal of the New Jersey Jazz Society. His column is titled From Far and Wide in All About Jazz.com. An American freelance writer, editor, translator and film/video narrator, Fradley moved to Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1960. He is former Denmark Contributor to DownBeat and has contributed to the Danish monthly, Jazz Special and other jazz magazines and periodicals in many fields. His feature on Denmark's jazz legend, the virtuosic bassist Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen, appeared in The Strad (Vol. 116, No. 1384), London-based monthly for the string music world. With the late Indiana University ethnomusicologist, Alan P. Merriam, Fradley coauthored a monograph on “Jazz - the word” for the journal Ethnomusicology (Vol. XII, No. 3, 1968). The article was reprinted as chapter one of the anthology, The Jazz Cadence of American Culture, edited by Robert G. O'Meally (665 pp, Columbia University Press, 1998). Fradley wrote a five-part, non- academic spin-off series on the word jazz for Nat Hentoff's and Martin Williams's The Jazz Review (1960), in New York. He covered, among other events, the early Newport Jazz Festivals for the Newark (NJ)News, and the 2002 Ascona (Switzerland) Jazz Festival for DownBeat and Jersey Jazz. Fradley edited and translated the 1934-1969 Harlem memoir of the late Danish Baron Timme Rosenkrantz. Scarecrow Press, in Maryland, expects to publish the hardcover edition of Harlem Jazz Adventures - A European Baron's Memoir in January 2012. The book's website is: http://www.JazzBaron.com. His other books include Environment Denmark (1972), Walt Disney's Donald Duck's Fritidsbok (1976) and The Haunted Hotel (1978), featuring all Disney characters. He translated Danske guitarer og deres byggere / Danish Guitars and their makers (1990), a coffee table book. Fradley's articles have appeared in Look magazine, international editions of Reader's Digest, the inflight magazine SAS Scanorama, Double Bassist, Abroad, Scandinavian Review, and many other periodicals in a range of fields. An amateur bassist, Frad played in Greenwich Village “loft” groups in New York. He was bassist and violinist for the original John Tchicai Trio in Denmark, 1972, and since the 1980s has played in the bass sections of advanced amateur symphonies in Greater Copenhagen. He plays bass in the annual Gladsaxe-Haydn Orkester, in Gladsaxe- Copenhagen. Fradley Garner's profile appears in the Marquis Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World.
