Fidel Cuellar

Colombian born, NY based jazz pianist.

About Me

A native from Bogotá Colombia, Fidel relocated to New York City in 2007 to continue his apprenticeship as a jazz pianist and composer, under the tutelage of renowned musicians Bruce Barth, Mike Holober, and John Patitucci, graduating Suma Cum Laude from the City College of New York’s jazz performance program in 2009.

Fidel’s stylistic versatility but distinct pianistic approach has put him in the radar of some of New York’s best jazz, latin jazz, and world-music musicians, such as award-winning drummer Bobby Sanabria, flutist Carlos Jimenez, and gospel singer Camille Newman, among many others. Fidel’s recording credits include “Thoughts” by Jimenez, featuring Vince Cherico on drums and Ruben Rodríguez on bass, and “Future Connection” by Cuban musicians Carlos del Pino and Rafael Monteagudo. He has performed as bandleader and sideman in world-class venues and festivals such as Iridium, Joe’s Pub, The Knitting Factory, and La Casita Festival at Lincoln Center.

My Jazz Story

My first exposure to jazz was Keith Jarrett's Köln Concert. Although not always considered technically a jazz album, it drew me into the world of improvisation, and amazed me with the possibilities of exploring a sound identity in the instrument. Keith's solo concert opened the door to his Blue Note albums playing standards, to other pianists, particularly Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea, and with that to the always growing world of jazz!

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, shelter in place and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary effort that will help musicians now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the bottom right video ad). Thank you.
