Donovan Mixon: Musical Artist/World Citizen
About Me
I moved from Istanbul to Evanston in 2010 and have brought with me two
projects: my teaching and performance space Jazz-Play Studio and Hybrid
Project – Chicago, my quintet that is the latest incarnation of my world jazz group
Hybrid Project – Istanbul, that is featured on my recording, Culmination. My music
has been described as a collection or richly unique compositions. I intend to
continue on this path of combining elements of the music I have been exposed to
during my world travels with my own American classical music [jazz] heritage.

Twenty Two is a new collaboration. The instrumentation is three violins, cello
and acoustic guitar. The repertoire crosses genres from classical works to pieces
based primarily on improvisation. I am encouraged by our recent premier concert
at Jazz-Play Studio in Evanston where we played to a packed house. The
conclusion of the event was punctuated by a standing ovation.

I am an academic of music aural perception as expressed in the collection of
study concepts explored in my critically acclaimed text Performance Ear Training
published by Advance Music. My method is designed to help the music student
develop an innate physical response to the musical situation in which he is
functioning. Performance ear training is yet another creative outlet for me in that
each time I present to a group of students, I usually discover something new.
