My Jazz Story

I met Buddy Guy when I was 21 years old. He was playing in Ottawa Ontario. I was a sophomore in music school and thought that blues was just tired old people music. Let's just say that the pitchers of beer I shared with my friends had no effect when Buddy took the stage. After the show, I was able to find his dressing room and speak with him for a few minutes. The kind welcoming spirit backstage complimented his joyous, generous personality onstage. That was fall 1990. Spring 2005, I premiered as a solo blues artist at the Chicago Blues Festival. The closer that evening was Buddy Guy. I would have never thought of playing the blues if I hadn't listened to and watched Buddy when I was young. Thanks and happy soon-to-be ninetieth birthday, Mr. Guy.
