I love jazz because...you can find yourself within a tradition. When you're playing, practicing performing with your axe you are working on yourself as a human being. It's language therapy using the platform of music which is genetically embedded in the minds of mankind, mammals and mother nature. I was first exposed to jazz: my dad played cool swing drums in southwest philly during the 1950s, Chico Hamilton style. I met Ravi Coltrane. A true gentleman. The best show I ever attended was Pasquale Grasso at Birdland. The first jazz record I bought was Lennie Tristano Quintet - Live at Birdland 1949 My advice to new listeners: Whatever your entry point respect those that opened the doors and the deep rabbit hole of influences your influences had. Or whatever else you have in mind.
