David Zakarian

About Me



David Zakarian is a composer and virtuoso alto saxophonist from Armenia, working in New York City. He is a standout as a compelling figure in the world of avant-garde music and improvised . His artistry transcends conventional boundaries, weaving together the rich tapestry of Armenian musical influences with the dynamic pulse of contemporary improvisation. A distinguished honors graduate from the Yerevan State Conservatory, David's approach to music is both inspired and intensely personal, inviting listeners into a world where tradition and innovation harmoniously coexist.

David's early career was marked by his role as the first alto chair and soloist for the Pop-Symphony Orchestra and Big Band of the Public Television and Radio of Armenia. Under the visionary guidance of maestro Yervand Yerznkyan, he captivated audiences at prestigious events, including the opening of the “Golden Apricot Film Festival” and the “International National Jazz Day” music festival. His performances extended to heartfelt concerts for Armenian troops in service, where his music served as a beacon of hope and resilience. Additionally, as a guest soloist and first alto saxophone chair for the Artsakh Jazz Band, he graced the stage at the Charles Aznavour Center in Artsakh, Nagorno-Karabakh, further showcasing his versatility.

David's quest for artistic growth led him to The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City, where he immersed himself in the vibrant avant-garde scene. There, he had the privilege of studying with luminaries like Reggie Workman, David Glasser, Andrew Cyrille, Diane Moser, Charles Tolliver, Jim Snidero, and Mario Escalante. His exploration of sound was further enriched through mentorship under the legendary Charles McPherson and apprenticeship with the esteemed composer Mikhail Kokjayev.

In the electric atmosphere of New York, David has shared his musical vision at renowned venues such as Lincoln Center, Legendary punk venue ABC No Rio in Les, Mezzrow, The Record Shop, and Downtown Music Gallery.

Collaborating with a constellation of notable artists—including Elias Stemseder, Kim Cass, Samuel Ber, John Elbaz, Kayvon Gordon, and Lester St. Louis—each encounter has expanded his creative output.David Zakarian continues to redefine the boundaries of musical expression, inviting audiences to experience the profound beauty of his avant-garde vision.
