About Me
David Unger and Samuel Thibeault are French documentary filmmakers, directors, and television producers.
David Unger and Samuel Thibeault are French documentary filmmakers, directors, and television producers whose work spans music, cultural history, and social documentary. Both have built careers exploring the stories behind artistic movements, historical events, and cultural figures, working across television documentaries, music films, and concert recordings.
A graduate of La Fémis, France’s national film school, David Unger has directed numerous documentaries for French broadcasters, including ARTE, France 3, France 5, and France Ô. His credits include Saint-Saëns, l’insaisissable (2021), New York, tendances yiddish (2012), and Abraham Inc. (2012). His work also encompasses concert films and recordings featuring artists from across the jazz and contemporary music scenes.
Samuel Thiebaut is a French director and producer whose work explores music, documentary filmmaking, and cultural history. He has directed films featuring artists such as Melvin Van Peebles, Quincy Jones, Ibrahim Maalouf, and Brad Mehldau. In 2002, he co-founded the Jazz à Porquerolles festival with filmmaker Frank Cassenti and helped establish Archie Shepp’s record label. Through his production company, Oléo Films, he continues to produce documentaries and music films for major broadcasters, including ARTE and France Télévisions.
Their collaboration brings together these complementary interests in music, cultural history, and the people who shape them. Among their joint projects is Une histoire de la musique d’ascenseur – De la muzak au streaming (2025), directed by Unger and produced by Thibeault with Oléo Films for ARTE France. Their work on a documentary project celebrating the centenary of Miles Davis continues this exploration of musical legacy and creative reinvention, examining how Davis’s music and artistic vision continue to inspire new generations of musicians.
