About Me
Daniel Spicer is a writer, broadcaster and improviser based in Brighton, UK.
He writes about music for The Wire and Jazzwise magazines and is probably working on at
least one book at this very moment.
He was nominated for 'Jazz Journalist of the Year' in the 2010 Parliamentary Jazz Awards.
He has written programme notes for the London Jazz Festival, the Contemporary Music
Network and the Barbican. He was writer-in-residence at the Jerwood/PRS Foundation Take
Five initiative 2007, 2008 & 2009.
He presents 'The Mystery Lesson', a weekly radio show on Brighton's 97.2FM Radio Reverb,
playing new releases in avant-garde improvised music including free-jazz, improv, noise
and more.
He is an occasional contributor to BBC Radio 3's 'Jazz on 3' programme.
He is a member of the chaotic improvising ensemble, Bolide; the free-jazz unit, West Hill
Blast Quartet; and the text/Improv duo, Mandarin Splashback. He also performs and
records solo poetry and Improv. Through all these projects, he has been at least partly
responsible for a number of largely unpopular CDs and tapes on various labels.
